About

The Roots

People know me as Jason Chan in the UK, my country of birth where I have lived for 30 years.

YenKid is my Chinese name and is a hallmark of my identity.

It forms the character combination for wise “英” and outstanding “傑”. Technically speaking, the pīnyīn for my name should be Yīngjié in Mandarin and Ying Kit in Cantonese.

But the English version of my name has a slightly different meaning and is an adaption of the Japanese currency “yen” and the English word for a young person.

I currently live in China. I have travelled to 18 countries across Europe and Asia. I love the feel of local culture and one of my favourite things is visiting the smaller towns as well as the main cities. I have been on multiple road trips, a cross-country high speed train journey and even sailed across the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas.

I am a passionate culture & language advocate and starting learning 3 languages from birth, English, Hakka and Cantonese. I then started taking French, German and Latin classes during my primary school years. Altogether I have qualifications in 4 different languages. I then enrolled on a Mandarin course during university and now learning Japanese, Korean and Russian in my spare time.

At Warwick University, I met interesting people from more than 30 countries and enrolled on a cultural immersion programme, based at Zhejiang University, a C9 League university in China.
